Winemaker Notes

The 2017 Tyler Winery RSW Cabernet Sauvignon is dark and powerful, with present but very supple and polished tannins, and all the great notes of cedar, tobacco, blackberries, coffee, and chocolate that make cabernet so appealing.

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Happy Canyon RSW is a polished Cabernet that's approachable now while promising a long life ahead in the cellar, offering a broad window of enjoyment for drinkers who love youthful fruit or those who enjoy their Cabernet with savory maturity. Medium ruby-purple, it has pure, layered scents of cassis, bitter chocolate, sage, aniseed, cracked pepper and violets. The full-bodied palate presents an intense core of violet-laced fruit on a pixelated, seamless frame, and this polished, pure wine offers a very long, iron-laced finish.

Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.

On the eastern end of the Santa Ynez Valley, the rolling hills of the tiny Happy Canyon AVA produce top quality reds from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and whites from Sauvignon blanc. The region’s low-nutrient soil grows smaller vines and in turn, higher quality wine grapes.
