Winemaker Notes

It’s confusing, I know. Basically, I have these three blocks of old vines at Bien Nacido and ‘N Block’ is one of them. It is the most complete of the three parcels I work with, the one I’ve worked with the longest, and routinely my favorite. In years of exceptional quality, I have decided to bottle a few barrels of this wine separately, and 2016 is certainly one of those years. It is deep, vibrant and full of energy. Fresh raspberry and blackberry fruit give way to a meaty, smoky, tobacco leaf composition. Elevated and persistent, the wine carries great weight and texture with an underlying tannin profile making this a powerful wine of wonderful structure and complexity. It will definitely reward patience, but certainly fun to drink now!

Revealing aromas of forest floor, black raspberries and peony, the 2016 Pinot Noir Bien Nacido N Block is a delicate, medium-bodied wine with an ample mid-palate, velvety tannins and a pure, fragrant finish. Of all Willett's Pinot Noirs, this is among the more reserved today, and while its polished structural elements and mouthwatering juiciness make it attractive today, I suspect the real interest will come with a few years of bottle ago.

Santa Maria Valley lies mainly in northern Santa Barbara County, with a small portion of it overlapping southern San Luis Obispo County. It is close to the Pacific, and runs east-west, which means warmer air in the eastern end draws cool air off the ocean in the west, and brings it through the valley. This effect, combined with abundant sunshine, lengthens the growing season. The longer growing season leads to long hang time, which promotes both ripeness and optimal acidity levels in grape berries. As early as the 1970’s, Santa Maria Valley was recognized as being a superior source of wine grapes, certainly including Chardonnay and Syrah. But arguably the top variety here is Pinot Noir.

Originally a domain primarily of growers, including the Miller Family of the justifiably famous Bien Nacido Vineyard, this AVA is now home to over 30 wineries. Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir consistently offers full flavors of cherry, strawberry and raspberry, often accompanied by notes of spice, cola, vanilla and earth. They show impressive balance and elegance, as well as great versatility with food.
