Twomey Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2013 Front Label

Winemaker Notes

The 2013 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir strikes a balance betweenthree elements - umami, fresh berry fruit and sous bois - andcaptures the ruggedness of the growing region. It has a red-rosecolor with subtle blue highlights and a nose of boysenberry, cranberry and cedar. The significant percent of whole clusters during fermentation lends this wine a savory mouthfeel. The palate is complemented by candied ginger, acute acidity and Thai spice with a long cranberry-laden finish.

The fruit for this 2013 comes from Gap’s Crown in the Petaluma Gap and Bailey Family Vineyard near Sebastopol, as well as Last Stop Ranch in Forestville, a vineyard that Twomey later purchased in early 2014. This is simple and clean coastal pinot noir, the fruit oscillating between a crisp raspberry flavor and a higher-toned violet aroma, while sandy tannins give a gentle pull against the implicit sweetness of the fruit.

The Sonoma Coast AVA is large in area but, not counting overlapping regions like Russian River Valley, only has a few thousand acres of grapevines—and it’s no wonder. Much of the region is rugged and not easily accessible. Its proximity to the Pacific Ocean’s fog and cool breezes limits the varieties that can be cultivated, but it proves to be an ideal environment for high quality Pinot Noir.

Since fog is a frequent fact of life here, as are heavy marine layers that sometimes bring rain, the best vineyards are wisely planted above the fog line, on picturesque ridges that capture enough sun to provide even ripening. That, with the overnight drop in temperature that reliably preserves acidity, results in fine expressions of Pinot Noir that often receive tremendous critic and consumer praise alike, and are often in high demand.
