Winemaker Notes

The 2014 Sauvignon Blanc is a multifaceted wine that combinesthe best elements of the four estate vineyards. It has a lightstraw yellow color and an enticing nose of kaffir lime, pear, elderberry, crystalized ginger and wet slate. The full palate is highlighted by a sweet attack which is deftly balanced by fresh, vibrant acidity and a purity of fruit. This layered, complex, well-knit wine has an extremely long finish with echoes of citrus, stone fruit and minerality.

Clean, sophisticated and fine, the 2014 Twomey by Silver Oak Sauvignon Blanc is a truly excellent effort. Light straw, green color; brisk and lively dried melon aroma, tropical and exotic, fine depth; medium bodied, zingy on the palate; dry, very good acidity, well balanced; super focused dried lemon peel flavors, a hint of savory herbs, minerally and bright; medium finish, crisp aftertaste. Just think if you had a dozen or two briny, raw oysters on a platter now, would that be perfect? (Tasted: June 10, 2015, San Francisco, CA)

With the majority of the fruit from the producer’s Calistoga and Oakville estate vineyards, as well as its Healdsburg property, this is a dry, citrus-laden wine, zesty and refreshing in lime and grapefruit. The acidity is dialed high, yet remains balanced by the density of fruit and body, the overall effect just right in terms of ripeness.

Capable of a vast array of styles, Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp, refreshing variety that equally reflects both terroir and varietal character. Though it can vary depending on where it is grown, a couple of commonalities always exist—namely, zesty acidity and intense aromatics. This variety is of French provenance. Somm Secret—Along with Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc is a proud parent of Cabernet Sauvignon. That green bell pepper aroma that all three varieties share is no coincidence—it comes from a high concentration of pyrazines (herbaceous aromatic compounds) inherent to each member of the family.

Reaching up California's coastline and into its valleys north of San Francisco, the North Coast AVA includes six counties: Marin, Solano, Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake. While Napa and Sonoma enjoy most of the glory, the rest produce no shortage of quality wines in an intriguing and diverse range of styles.

Climbing up the state's rugged coastline, the chilly Marin County, just above the City and most of Sonoma County, as well as Mendocino County on the far north end of the North Coast successfully grow cool-climate varieties like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and in some spots, Riesling. Inland Lake County, on the other hand, is considerably warmer, and Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc produce some impressive wines with affordable price tags.
