Winemaker Notes

The 2005 vintage has a rich, deep, rich purple-violet color that hints at the fruit and body to follow. Aromas of ripe raspberry, cherry, plum, licorice and a slight smokiness are evidenced in the nose. On the palate, the wine has a supple, balanced mouthfeel and good grip, with flavors that mimic the aromas, plus luscious black cherry preserves. This Syrah finishes with age-worthy tannins but, at the same time, is approachable enough to enjoy now. This vintage was aged for 10 months in predominantly French barrels, then blended with 7% Grenache.

The grapes for Two Angels come exclusively from the renowned Shannon Ridge Vineyards on extremely volcanic, red pumice stone terroir. Hugging the mountain rims along the east edge of the new High Valley AVA at close to 2,200 feet (the highest vineyards in California), the area is reminiscent of the Rhone Valley's Crozes-Hermitage vineyards.

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”

Sitting on the northeast side of the Clear Lake appellation, this warm area boasts multiple soil types that allow growers a lot of flexibility and experimentation with grape varieties. While Sauvignon blanc is a mainstay, this zone excels with Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, as well as other less common varieties like Barbera and Tempranillo.
