The 2022 Turnbull BLACK LABEL CABERNET SAUVIGNON OAKVILLE shows a deep ruby, purple hue with fragrant spice notes and excellent, persistent aromas; full-bodied, lacy, and voluptuous on the palate; dry, with lovely balance and beautifully ripe tannins; rich blackberry and licorice flavors are complemented by well-integrated oak; finishing long, firm, and structured. Paired with a dry-aged bone-in ribeye, seared to a charred crust and basted with garlic and rosemary, the wine’s depth and structure rise to meet the intensity of the beef, while its ripe tannins soften against the rich marbling—resulting in a bold, layered, and deeply satisfying pairing that speaks to power, polish, and precision. A selection of the winery's best lots, normally from the Leopoldina and Fortuna Vineyards, Turnbull's 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Black Label offers up seductive scents of ripe black cherries, powdered sugar, loam and mocha. It's full-bodied, soft and expansive in the mouth, but it doesn't have the structure and textural richness of the last four years or so, finishing long and mouthwatering. It's still an excellent wine but perhaps one to drink on the younger side.
One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.
Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
