Winemaker Notes

Vineyard 1955 is located in the La Consulta district of the San Carlos county in the southern tip of the Uco valley, at an altitude of 3,000’ elevation. The vineyard is named for the year in which it was planted – 1955. Old vine Malbec! One of Mendoza’s great viticultural riches are the beautiful old vine vineyards of La Consulta. The vines are naturally balanced with exceptionally low yields – often under 1.5 lb. per vine. The fruit has a wonderful balance between rich concentration and elegant balance. The vineyard has light sandy, silty soils, very shallow with a subsoil of calcareous covered round rocks. These soils lend a suprising freshness with a touch of saline minerality.

The 2016 Tintonegro Vineyard 1955 is a pure Malbec produced from a vineyard planted in 1955 in La Consulta. Yields are low, so they need the grapes from two vines to produce a bottle of wine. It fermented with some 20% full clusters and matured in French barriques for 12 months. It has good complexity, moderate ripeness and good freshness and nuance. It's powerful and elegant.

Rich, silky texture, with balance and length. The juicy, dense, and ripe palate is abundant in flavors of blackberry, boysenberry, raspberry, and chocolate.

An array of classy aromas include plum, currant, spice, graphite and even hot desert stones. The palate on this old-vines Malbec is edgy, with rubbing tannins and driving acidity. Chocolaty oak flavors blend with herbal berry fruit, while this big wine from a difficult vintage finishes with lasting chocolaty oak. Drink through 2030. Vineyard Brands.

Celebrated for its bold flavors and supple texture, Malbec has enjoyed runaway success in Argentina since the late 20th century. The grape originated in Bordeaux, France, where it historically contributed color and tannin to blends. A French agronomist, who saw great potential for the variety in Mendoza’s hot, high-altitude landscape, brought Malbec to Argentina in 1868. Somm Secret—If you’re trying to please a crowd, Malbec is generally a safe bet with its combination of dense fruit and soft tannins.

By far the largest and best-known winemaking province in Argentina, Mendoza is responsible for over 70% of the country’s enological output. Set in the eastern foothills of the Andes Mountains, the climate is dry and continental, presenting relatively few challenges for viticulturists during the growing season. Mendoza, divided into several distinctive sub-regions, including Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley, is the source of some of the country’s finest wines.

For many wine lovers, Mendoza is practically synonymous with Malbec. Originally a Bordelaise variety brought to Argentina by the French in the mid-1800s, here it found success and renown that it never knew in its homeland where a finicky climate gives mixed results. Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Pinot Noir are all widely planted here as well (and sometimes even blended with each other or Malbec). Mendoza's main white varieties include Chardonnay, Torrontés, Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon.
