Winemaker Notes

The Price Family Vineyards (PFV) Estate Pinot Noir is an Estate blend of our iconic sites: Durell, Gap’s Crown, and Walala Vineyards. We also layer in soon-to-be iconic vineyards like One Sky, William James, and Alana from our portfolio allowing us to take all the strengths of individual places and build an unforgettable and cohesive wine. The nose hints of fresh blackberry and strawberry while the palate explodes with plum and spice. The finish is persistent and begs you back for more! The grapes in the PFV Estate Pinot Noir hail from some of the most renowned vineyards sites in California. Each property is owned and farmed by our Three Sticks’ owner, Bill Price and his farming company Price Family Vineyards. Gap’s Crown Vineyard, Walala Vineyard, and Durell Vineyard make up this unique blend. These properties are from very diverse terroirs—Gap’s Crown in the Petaluma Wind Gap, Walala sits on the extreme Sonoma Coast near the town of Annapolis, and Durell closer to San Francisco in the hills of Sonoma. They all share the similar quality of being cooled by the Pacific Coast winds and blankets of Northern California fog. Our newest addition to the Three Sticks family gives us the opportunity to take our components from each of our vineyards and build a wine that showcases all of the great aspects of the Sonoma Coast appellation.2016 was a relatively smooth year that unfolded at a steady pace and with mild temperatures. While we didn’t have many exceptionally hot days, it was one of the earlier harvests on our record. Flowering and fruit set beautifully and yields were above normal, which was a nice change from previous years. We harvested our first grapes in mid-August and had picked about 25% of our Pinot Noir and then a sudden cool spell arrived. This allowed cooler climate vineyards that had yet to be harvested to remain on the vine longer and develop deep and expressive flavors. The berries were smaller and heartier than normal which resulted in great depth of color and structure. We are extremely excited by the 2016’s - they are something special! Pretty, expressive, and pleasurable.

A deep ruby blend of fruit from Three Sticks’ estate vineyards; bright, fresh, and tangy cherry fruit; smooth texture and juicy notes; ripe and generous with a lasting finish.

This wine sources from several of the producer's coastal sites, from Gap's Crown to Durell Vineyard. It's herbal and smoky, velvety thick and soft, with an underlying persistence of cardamom, clove, orange and dark cherry. The full-bodied concentration supports polished tannins and a density of fruit.

Very complete, if tannic, this offers complex flavors of smoke, dried berry, anise and sage, with tannins laced with gravelly earth notes. Drink now through 2022.

Three Sticks Wines is a boutique, family-owned winery recognized for pinot noir and chardonnay. Proprietor Bill Price III (nicknamed “Billy Three Sticks”) owns six Grand Cru level estate vineyards in Sonoma County, including three Heritage vineyards–Durell, Gap’s Crown, and Walala and three Monopole vineyards–One Sky, Alana, and William James. An intimate relationship with each property shines through in each of the Three Sticks wines, reflecting a keen understanding of how working with great vineyards, along with a meticulous winemaking style, produces inspiring results.

The Vallejo-Castenada Adobe (built in 1842) was built by Captain Salvador Vallejo, brother of General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, the Commandante Generale of the northern territory of Mexico (modern day Sonoma). The Prices purchased the property in 2012 and embarked on a two-year preservation project. The Three Sticks team worked with Sonoma historians and the Sonoma League for Historic Preservation to restore and protect the fabric of the property. They commissioned San Francisco-based designer Ken Fulk and his team to design the ambience of the Adobe, as it is known locally. The historic landmark in downtown Sonoma is now home to the hospitality of Three Sticks.

The Sonoma Coast AVA is large in area but, not counting overlapping regions like Russian River Valley, only has a few thousand acres of grapevines—and it’s no wonder. Much of the region is rugged and not easily accessible. Its proximity to the Pacific Ocean’s fog and cool breezes limits the varieties that can be cultivated, but it proves to be an ideal environment for high quality Pinot Noir.

Since fog is a frequent fact of life here, as are heavy marine layers that sometimes bring rain, the best vineyards are wisely planted above the fog line, on picturesque ridges that capture enough sun to provide even ripening. That, with the overnight drop in temperature that reliably preserves acidity, results in fine expressions of Pinot Noir that often receive tremendous critic and consumer praise alike, and are often in high demand.
