Winemaker Notes

Blackberry jam, plum blossoms, sage, and star anise greet you in the glass of this Petite Sirah. On the palate, wild blueberry, luscious pie spices, and brown butter are accented by bright acidity and bursts of pepper. Velvety tannins give was to a long finish. A showstopper to the last sip, this wine will continue to shine for many years to come.

An excellent pairing with smoked brisket, barbecue ribs, grilled steak, and wild game. This petite also pairs well with hearty stews, charcuterie, and dark chocolate.

Fermented with 25% whole clusters in a five ton open top, stainless steel tank. Aged in 25% new French Oak barrels for 21 months. Bottled unfined, unfiltered.

This robust red wine leads with aromas of sea-air minerality followed by notes of black plum, boysenberry, toasted wood and some fennel. Some may find the tannins a bit overpowering, but the elevated acidity as well as the fruit concentration provides balance and nuance.

With its deep color, firm tannins and bold flavors, there is nothing petite about Petite Sirah. The variety, originally known as Durif in the Rhône, took on its more popular moniker after being imported to California in the early 1880s. Quintessentially recognized today as a grape of the Golden State, Petite Sirah works well blended with Zinfandel and finds success as a single varietal wine in the state’s warmer districts. Somm Secret—Petite Sirah is not a smaller version of Syrah but it is an offspring of Syrah and the now nearly extinct French Alpine variety called Peloursin.
