Winemaker Notes

Shiraz from Langhorne Creek generally suits this style of wine well as Shiraz fruit from the region has no problem reaching this level of ripeness and displaying ripe berry characters. Furthermore Langhorne Creek Shiraz characteristically has a soft tannin structure that contributes to mouthfeel and early drinkablity.

Critical Acclaim

WS 89
Wine Spectator
A fresh and vital red, this is taut with fine tannins around a core of cherry, boysenberry and black pepper flavors, lingering well. Drink now through 2017.
RP 88
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Winner’s Tank 2009 Shiraz presents a very deep purple-black color and intense nose of warm blackberry and blueberry preserves, mulberries and spice. Crisp, rich and full in the mouth, it gives medium-firm chewy tannins and a long warm-berry finish. Drink it now to 2016.

The Winner's Tank is a recent discovery that highlights what can be accomplished when an extremely talented winemaker gets his hands on some premium, Langhorne Creek fruit. Winner's Tank is a new venture between Reid Bosward of Kaesler vineyards, and David and Cathy Knight, owners of the Winner's Tank site. The name relates to an old water tank that sits in the corner of the vineyard. In true Aussie spirit, a stong rivalry exist between the three neighboring towns in the local Australian Rules Football competition. Each year the winning team heads out to the vineyard to the vineyard to paint the tank their team colors.

Though Syrah originated in the Rhône Valley of France, Australia is home to the oldest Syrah (called Shiraz here) vines on the planet. Found in Australia’s Barossa Valley, where phylloxera has never threated viticulture, these ancient vines are between 140 to 175 years old!

Having brought fame and merit to the country’s wine scene since the early 1950s, namely via the debut of Penfolds Grange, today Syrah (Shiraz) claims rank as the most widely planted grape in Australia. In fact, the amount of land dedicated to Shiraz in Australia is now almost equivalent to what it is in France. Australian Shiraz has its own personality with flavors and aromas of intense blackberry, fruitcake, menthol, tobacco leaf and umami. Conveniently one can find great Australian Shiraz at a variety of price points but the very best will be dense, gloriously complex and capable of long aging.
