The Hilt Vanguard Pinot Noir 2014 Front Bottle Shot The Hilt Vanguard Pinot Noir 2014 Front Label

Winemaker Notes

Endowed with a nose that is brooding, dark and seductive. Floral with strong notes of black plum and black tea. Palate surprises with its graceful attack. Crunchy and herbal with sumptuous blackberry and English Breakfast tea. Slides across the palate with fruit and smoke. Refined and gentle tannins on the tongue are ushered out by a gentle push of sweet red fruit. A ponderous wine with elegance and so many dimensions. Full of pleasure immediately out of the bottle. Simple equation: bright sunshine, exposed ridgelines, rocky soils = powerful and silky fruit with delicious and chewy tannin. Suave and seductive as only Vanguard Pinot Noir can be.

More plush, with gorgeous black raspberry, toasted spice, dried flowers and a touch of licorice, the 2014 Pinot Noir Vanguard hits the palate with gorgeous fruit, a rounded, supple texture and present, yet ripe tannin. It's much more approachable than the Old Guard, but I suspect it will evolve just as nicely.

The Hilt Welcome to The Hilt Estate Winery Video

Wines defined by place, style and time. In the southwest corner of Sta. Rita Hills AVA lies a rugged, windswept, coastal vineyard, called The Hilt Estate; estate grower producer of stunning Pinot Noir and Chardonnay reflective of this dynamic corner of California.

Pushing the limits; in the farthest southwest reach of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA is home to Radian & Bentrock Vineyards, these vineyards dictate The Hilt style.

The numerous microclimates and unique soils provide a multilayered backdrop to create 3 unique expressions: Estate, The Guards, and Single Vineyards.

In 2014, Matt Dees, Ruben Solorzano & team took on operation and farming of Radian and Bentrock Vineyards and shifted to precise sustainable & organic farming to transform and revitalize the soil.

Santa Maria Valley lies mainly in northern Santa Barbara County, with a small portion of it overlapping southern San Luis Obispo County. It is close to the Pacific, and runs east-west, which means warmer air in the eastern end draws cool air off the ocean in the west, and brings it through the valley. This effect, combined with abundant sunshine, lengthens the growing season. The longer growing season leads to long hang time, which promotes both ripeness and optimal acidity levels in grape berries. As early as the 1970’s, Santa Maria Valley was recognized as being a superior source of wine grapes, certainly including Chardonnay and Syrah. But arguably the top variety here is Pinot Noir.

Originally a domain primarily of growers, including the Miller Family of the justifiably famous Bien Nacido Vineyard, this AVA is now home to over 30 wineries. Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir consistently offers full flavors of cherry, strawberry and raspberry, often accompanied by notes of spice, cola, vanilla and earth. They show impressive balance and elegance, as well as great versatility with food.
