The earthy decadence of cherry, bark and meat aromas and flavors are fascinating, with a depth of fruit and creamy tannins that run the length of the wine. It’s medium- to full-bodied with a flavor finish and a juicy and polished texture. Shows tension as well. Old vines planted in 1935.

Wine Spectator
Brooding yet supple, this red is ripe, offering plum, fruitcake, black pepper, iron and underbrush flavors. The finish exerts a well of dusty tannins, leaving a compact feel. Best from 2027 through 2040. 50 cases imported.

The 2020 Vigna dell'Impero, 100% Sangiovese, is a good wine. Even a very good wine, certainly better than some previous editions. At 15% alcohol, the 2020 is more about forward fruit and textural intensity than varietal character. Hopefully, the new Valdarno di Sopra DOC will be an impetus for producers to make wines that speak more of place. Certainly, the potential for that to happen is there.

The Tenuta Sette Ponti 2020 Valdarno di Sopra Vigna dell'Impero is an organic expression of 100% Sangiovese from old vines across three hectares. This hot vintage presents some stewy characteristics of cooked cherry and baked plum. The wine presents typical Sangiovese aromas, but you don't get the same nuance and detail that you might find in a cooler growing season. Indeed, some of those finer details are muted by the wine's heavy-handed 15% alcohol content.
Legendary in Italy for its Renaissance art and striking landscape, Tuscany is also home to many of the country’s best red wines. Sangiovese reigns supreme here, as either the single varietal, or a dominant player, in almost all of Tuscany’s best.
A remarkable Chianti, named for its region of origin, will have a bright acidity, supple tannins and plenty of cherry fruit character. From the hills and valleys surrounding the medieval village of Montalcino, come the distinguished and age-worthy wines based on Brunello (Sangiovese). Earning global acclaim since the 1970s, the Tuscan Blends are composed solely of international grape varieties or a mix of international and Sangiovese. The wine called Vine Nobile di Montepulciano, composed of Prognolo Gentile (Sangiovese) and is recognized both for finesse and power.
