Winemaker Notes

This year's Colson Canyon Syrah represents one of the most powerful and structured Colson's produced to date. 2013 was a very dry vintage that stressed the vines and resulted in small, intense berries that gave us dark, intense juice. After approximately 21 days of skin contact, the juice was pressed off to French oak barrels for aging. 80% of the barrels were neutral and 20% were new, following the traditional aging plan for the Colson. The resulting wine is deep and pure with woody notes and a decadent, velvety mouthfeel. Blackberries, black currants, smoke, pepper and vanilla round out the flavor profile.

The 2013 Syrah Colson Canyon Vineyard has a medium to deep ruby color and takes several minutes in the glass to unfold from cast iron to deeper scents of wild berries and charcuterie. 2013 was the first in a series of drought vintages (2013-2015), but it has an alluringly restrained, savory style—it would be easy to peg it as European. The medium-bodied palate has a harmonious structure of abundant, pixelated tannins and vibrant acidity and a long, graphite-laced finish.

A real find, rich, juicy and deeply fruited, with blackberry, wild berry and black currant flavors. This is both powerful and graceful, revealing black licorice and dusty herb accents as this builds to a long, sleek finish. Drink now through 2026.

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”

The largest and perhaps most varied of California’s wine-growing regions, the Central Coast produces a good majority of the state's wine. This vast California wine district stretches from San Francisco all the way to Santa Barbara along the coast, and reaches inland nearly all the way to the Central Valley.

Encompassing an extremely diverse array of climates, soil types and wine styles, it contains many smaller sub-AVAs, including San Francisco Bay, Monterey, the Santa Cruz Mountains, Paso Robles, Edna Valley, Santa Ynez Valley and Santa Maria Valley.

While the Central Coast California wine region could probably support almost any major grape varietiy, it is famous for a few Central Coast reds and whites. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel are among the major ones. The Central Coast is home to many of the state's small, artisanal wineries crafting unique, high-quality wines, as well as larger producers also making exceptional wines.
