Winemaker Notes

"The 2003 Shiraz Pressings is among the finest Shiraz wines I have ever tasted from Heathcote. A brilliant effort cropped at 2.2 tons of fruit per acre, and aged 18 months in 90% French and 10% American oak, its opaque purple color is accompanied by a sweet, voluptuous mid-palate and a huge finish. This outstanding 2003 should age well for 10-15 years."

Taylors Wines, Australia
The Taylor family were wine merchants in Sydney before establishing the now-famous winery in the Clare Valley, South Australia. In 1969, Bill Taylor Snr., along with his sons John and Bill, purchased a holding of 178 hectares by the Wakefield River in Auburn and planted Cabernet Sauvignon. The excellent Bordeaux wines such as Mouton-Rothschild had long held a fascination for the Taylor brothers and producing wines of comparable quality in Australia prompted the family’s foray into the winemaking industry. With this goal in mind, the site was carefully chosen for the red brown loam over limestone soils (called terra rossa) and the cool climate of the Clare Valley, known to be excellent for producing Cabernet Sauvignon.

Though Syrah originated in the Rhône Valley of France, Australia is home to the oldest Syrah (called Shiraz here) vines on the planet. Found in Australia’s Barossa Valley, where phylloxera has never threated viticulture, these ancient vines are between 140 to 175 years old!

Having brought fame and merit to the country’s wine scene since the early 1950s, namely via the debut of Penfolds Grange, today Syrah (Shiraz) claims rank as the most widely planted grape in Australia. In fact, the amount of land dedicated to Shiraz in Australia is now almost equivalent to what it is in France. Australian Shiraz has its own personality with flavors and aromas of intense blackberry, fruitcake, menthol, tobacco leaf and umami. Conveniently one can find great Australian Shiraz at a variety of price points but the very best will be dense, gloriously complex and capable of long aging.
