Winemaker Notes

The original dream belonged to Bill Hepburn. The selection of a vineyard site is of paramount importance and it can take years to find the right piece of terroir. Bill discovered his dream on the west slopes of Mt.Camel in the Heathcote district, planting a 10 acre vineyard of Shiraz vines on 143 acres of rare, north facing Cambrian Earth. It was a modest start, with borrowed equipment, friendly neighbours and supportive family. Bill spent those early years camped in a caravan, which remains on site, not far from a large gum tree under which he built a ‘thunderbox' (the Australian country version of an outdoor toilet).

The cold nights finally got to Bill and he decided it was time to pass the dream on. The Caravan of Dreams Shiraz Pressings is made in Bill Hepburn's honor.

The 2006 Pressings Shiraz Caravan of Dreams was aged for 18 months in new American oak. It offers an expressive nose of cedar, spice box, pencil lead, game, and blueberry compote. Dense, full-bodied, and structured on the palate, it has a big core of concentrated, savory blue and black fruit, with pepper and chocolate notes making an appearance. Give it 6-8 years of additional cellaring and drink it from 2015 to 2030.

Ripe, focused and silky, brimming with blackberry and currant fruit, shaded with hints of coconut and almond. The finish lingers expressively. Has a nice hint of minerality. Best from 2009 through 2016. 300 cases made.

Though Syrah originated in the Rhône Valley of France, Australia is home to the oldest Syrah (called Shiraz here) vines on the planet. Found in Australia’s Barossa Valley, where phylloxera has never threated viticulture, these ancient vines are between 140 to 175 years old!

Having brought fame and merit to the country’s wine scene since the early 1950s, namely via the debut of Penfolds Grange, today Syrah (Shiraz) claims rank as the most widely planted grape in Australia. In fact, the amount of land dedicated to Shiraz in Australia is now almost equivalent to what it is in France. Australian Shiraz has its own personality with flavors and aromas of intense blackberry, fruitcake, menthol, tobacco leaf and umami. Conveniently one can find great Australian Shiraz at a variety of price points but the very best will be dense, gloriously complex and capable of long aging.
