Winemaker Notes

This radiant Sauvignon Blanc presents with pale straw yellow with hints of green hues. Pristine estate fruit is showcased on the nose, where this wine gives generously of pink grapefruit and lime citrus aromas with a subtle thread of green guava and fennel. In the cellar, minimal intervention yields a vivid expression of freshness on the palate with flavors of grapefruit and lime zest zinging through the finish to create a wine of agility, brightness, and devotion to its essence.

Michael Scholz and his team grow some of the best sauvignon blanc in Napa Valley at Dollarhide Ranch, St. Supéry’s estate in the eastern hills. The long, cool harvest season allowed the fruit for this wine to ripen into a brisk, gentle, mouthwatering flavor of green lime and agave. It’s the best vintage of the wine we’ve tasted, on par with some of the exceptional releases of the Dollarhide Estate Vineyard bottling (that one being a block selection that sees some oak; this one is fermented entirely in stainless steel). Well worth buying by the case, this is a delicious white for ceviche, spicy Thai prawns, or any roast fish. Best Buy

COMMENTARY: Over the past decade, St. Supéry has been one of the Napa Valley's top Sauvignon Blanc producers. The 2018 vintage is sleek and persistent. TASTING NOTES: This wine is bright, fresh, and lively. Its aromas of ripe core fruits, citrus hints, and dried herbs should pair well with sliced raw tuna in a tossed salad with a light dressing. (Tasted: July 18, 2019, San Francisco, CA)

Distinctive, with floral details and juicy flavors of peach and hard lemon candy. Touches of lemongrass and lemon verbena add aromatic lift on the finish. Drink now.

The diversity of Dollarhide’s terroir contributes to the successful farming of red and white Bordeaux varieties.

One of the world's most highly regarded regions for wine production as well as tourism, the Napa Valley was responsible for bringing worldwide recognition to California winemaking. In the 1960s, a few key wine families settled the area and hedged their bets on the valley's world-class winemaking potential—and they were right.

The Napa wine industry really took off in the 1980s, when producers scooped up vineyard lands and planted vines throughout the county. A number of wineries emerged, and today Napa is home to hundreds of producers ranging from boutique to corporate. Cabernet Sauvignon is definitely the grape of choice here, with many winemakers also focusing on Bordeaux blends. Napa whites are usually Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that claim specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil. Farthest south and coolest from the influence of the San Pablo Bay is Carneros, followed by Coombsville to its northeast and then Yountville, Oakville and Rutherford. Above those are the warm St. Helena and the valley's newest and hottest AVA, Calistoga. These areas follow the valley floor and are known generally for creating rich, dense, complex and smooth reds with good aging potential. The mountain sub appellations, nestled on the slopes overlooking the valley AVAs, include Stags Leap District, Atlas Peak, Chiles Valley (farther east), Howell Mountain, Mt. Veeder, Spring Mountain District and Diamond Mountain District. Wines from the mountain regions are often more structured and firm, benefiting from a lot of time in the bottle to evolve and soften.
