Winemaker Notes

Sonoma Rising serves the dual purpose of providing financial support to the Sonoma County Vintners Emergency Relief Fund. Funds raised by the Sonoma Rising lots will have a direct impact to the short-and long-term recovery efforts of those who were affected by the October 2017 wildfires. We believe in the fortitude and resilience of our community and our ability to work together to endure and recover from the wildfires. Sonoma Rising "Fortitude" is a once-in-a-lifetime alliance of four of Sonoma County’s most distinguished Cabernet Sauvignon producers. These wineries share an affinity for hillside-grown Cabernet, and the belief that these wines are unique expressions of Sonoma County. The blend of Sonoma Rising is created from finished wines, crafted by each of these producers, from the 2016 vintage. It is a gorgeous Cabernet of great structure and density, with layers of complexity.

Winemakers Contributing to this Blend:

  • Jesse Katz, Aperture
  • Jennifer Higgins, Lambert Bridge Winery
  • Randall Watkins, Laurel Glen Vineyard
  • Emma Kudritzki-Hall, Mauritson Wines

While Sonoma County is acclaimed—and rightfully so—for its Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, and Zinfandels, it also produces exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Of the region’s 18 American Viticultural Areas, only a handful produce top-notch Cabernet Sauvignon. These appellations include Alexander Valley, Knights Valley, Sonoma Valley and Dry Creek Valley. Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignons made in these appellations can offer a complex array of aromas and flavors. Fruit notes such as blackberry, blackcurrant, cassis, black cherry and raspberry often are accompanied by hints of graphite, dusty earth, cigar box, toast and vanilla. The varietal has a rich history in Sonoma, and some of these Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet-based blends rival the best from Napa Valley.
