Winemaker Notes

Stunning ruby and violet color, speaks to full maturity and a great site. Aromatics are extremely generous in 2012, warm spice, dark fruits of cherry and raspberry, and an attack of supremely dense and sweet fruits followed by a hedonistic, saturated finish that is both lasting and delicate. Cellared in pristine conditions, the 2012 Skywalker Pinot Noir will last a decade or more.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”

Bordered by Napa and Sonoma Valleys to the north and the Golden gate Bridge to the south, most of the region’s vineyards are planted on Marin County’s western side where they are exposed to the moist and cold air of the Pacific Ocean. Varieties like Pinot noir and Chardonnay do well here.
