Skylark Lawer Vineyard Syrah 2014 Front Label

Winemaker Notes

Lawer is an amphitheater-shaped vineyard tucked back in the Knights Valley AVA in Sonoma. We farm the top section of this southwest facing slope, planted to the Rhone clone 877 on volcanic soils. 2011 was a cool vintage in Sonoma, with early October rains complicating picking dates. Lawer is well-drained and protected, so we picked very clean fruit under sunny skies on October 21. We decided against any whole cluster inclusion and shortened skin contact in the tank, resulting in our most elegant Lawer syrah to date. As is our custom with Lawer, we allowed the 2011 generous time on the cork before release.

Opaque. Beguiling nose of bacon fat, raspberry and iron rich graphite. The dark fruit viscosity is buffered by structure and acidity, leading into a focused, pure finish. Very approachable now with a decant and this vintage will age gracefully.

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”

A small and picturesque valley separating Napa Valley on its south border and Alexander Valley to its north, Knights Valley excels in similar varieties as the two aforementioned appellations, namely red Bordeaux varieties and blends, as well as Sauvignon blanc. Originally established by Beringer Vineyards, today several outstanding producers claim acreage here. The circadian cooling effects of the nearby Pacific Ocean create a nighttime respite for vineyards during the hot growing season.
