Winemaker Notes

Organically grown on a ridge line of red volcanic soil and rock that was planted in 1945. These dry-farmed, old girls create stunning aromatics of white pepper, red fruit, and pretty lift. Gorgeous.

COMMENTARY: The 2017 Shypoke Twin Rock Zinfandel deftly shows the power found in Mendocino red wines. TASTING NOTES: This wine explodes in its aromas and flavors of ripe berries that last forever on the palate. Pair it with homemade, medium-spicy chili. (Tasted: December 5, 2020, San Francisco, CA)

Shypoke, California
Shypoke calls the Calistoga AVA home. Our estate vineyard is located in the north-western corner of the world famous Napa Valley. Our dirt to bottle history began in 1904, when Peter Heitz' great grandparents immigrated from Alsace and literally planted roots and built bonded winery #130 for the production of fine wines. Through five generations of grape growers and winemakers, our family has continued the vision and efforts begun in 1904.
Each wine honors the traditions of a family working together, to farm heirloom vines and to hand craft the resulting fruit into uniquely elegant and honest wines of place and vintage.
Rooted in our family history, we craft wines that are both delicious and interesting. Above all, we work to make wines that we are proud to put on our table, as well as yours. The picking knife featured on our label signifies the harmony of Shypoke's farming and winemaking practices.

Unapologetically bold, spice-driven and jammy, Zinfandel has secured its title as the darling of California vintners by adapting well to the state's diverse microclimates and landscapes. Born in Croatia, it later made its way to southern Italy where it was named Primitivo. Fortunately, the imperial nursery of Vienna catalogued specimens of the vine, and it later made its way to New England in 1829. Parading the true American spirit, Zinfandel found a new home in California during the Gold Rush of 1849. Somm Secret—California's ancient vines of Zinfandel are those that survived the neglect of Prohibition; today these vines produce the most concentrated, ethereal and complex examples.

A large and diverse appellation within California’s North Coast AVA, Mendocino is home to several smaller sub-regions—most notably the Anderson Valley. This scenic region, with rolling hills covered in redwood forests as well as vineyards, is one of the world’s top producers of certified organically-grown grapes. Due to wide geographical and climatic variation, a vast array of wine styles can be found here.
