Winemaker Notes

A delicate roséwine made from red grapes. Hand-harvested at night, then pressed cold withminimal skin contact and cold fermented in stainless steel, this wine is refreshinglylight with favors of alpine strawberry and white peach. It finishes dry and crispwith vibrant acidity. It is a reminder of the incredible versatility that Pinot Noirhas to offer. Enjoy with poached salmon, summer picnics, a charcuterie platter, orjust sitting on the back porch and enjoying the summer evening.

Cold fermented in stainless-steel tanks, this is one stunning rosé, and we’ve tasted our fair share this year. Rose and raspberry scent the glass, while cherry and pomegranate are inviting on the palate, with jasmine kicking in midway. A refreshing floral bloom, the wine is part creamy, part stony, but streamlined and pure all the way.

A pale peach-colored rosé with aromas of raspberries, wild strawberries, pomegranate and rose petals. It’s medium-bodied, fresh and fruity. Creamy and delicious finish. Dry.

Tasting of watermelon candy in all the right ways, this crisp, light and well-made wine is layered in additional flavors of strawberry, orange and grapefruit: simple and straightforward in approach, with just enough sophistication to keep it interesting.

Schug Winery Video

Schug Winery was founded in 1980 with unwavering dedication to Pinot Noir excellence—a specialization that spans 45 years and sets them apart from generalist wineries. Walter Schug, the legendary winemaker who created Joseph Phelps' iconic Insignia, established his legacy in Carneros, where low-intervention Old World winemaking meets California terroir.

Today, 5th-generation German winemaker Johannes Scheid continues this authentic heritage with wines that consistently score 90+ points across their entire portfolio. Johannes trained at Walter's alma mater in Germany, bringing multi-generational European winemaking expertise to their sustainable California practices.

What makes Schug exceptional is their genuine commitment to specialization and authenticity. While others spread their focus across multiple varietals, they've perfected their craft with nearly half a century devoted to exceptional Pinot Noir. This deep expertise, combined with their European winemaking tradition and compelling value proposition, has driven their national expansion and established Schug as a trusted name among wine enthusiasts who appreciate both heritage and quality.

Whether it’s playful and fun or savory and serious, most rosé today is not your grandmother’s White Zinfandel, though that category remains strong. Pink wine has recently become quite trendy, and this time around it’s commonly quite dry. Since the pigment in red wines comes from keeping fermenting juice in contact with the grape skins for an extended period, it follows that a pink wine can be made using just a brief period of skin contact—usually just a couple of days. The resulting color depends on grape variety and winemaking style, ranging from pale salmon to deep magenta.

A vast appellation covering Sonoma County’s Pacific coastline, the Sonoma Coast AVA runs all the way from the Mendocino County border, south to the San Pablo Bay. The region can actually be divided into two sections—the actual coastal vineyards, marked by marine soils, cool temperatures and saline ocean breezes—and the warmer, drier vineyards further inland, which are still heavily influenced by the Pacific but not quite with same intensity.

Contained within the appellation are the much smaller Fort Ross-Seaview and Petaluma Gap AVAs.

The Sonoma Coast is highly regarded for elegant Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and, increasingly, cool-climate Syrah. The wines have high acidity, moderate alcohol, firm tannin, and balanced ripeness.
