Winemaker Notes

Schramsberg Reserve is their top Pinot Noir-focused brut sparkling wine. Representing about 3 percent of their annual production, this richly flavored and full-bodied sparkler is made from only the finest base-wine lots produced each year. Over seven years old upon release, this fruitful, yet dry, toasty and creamy bubbly will age gracefully for a good 20 to 30 years beyond the vintage date.

The Reserve is well-suited with a main course, such as fruit-stuffed veal, pork tenderloin, roasted duck with mango, cedar-plank grilled salmon and curried chicken salad. This flavorful bubbly can also be served as an aperitif with smoked oysters, caviar and hard cheeses such as aged Swiss Sbrinz, Sonoma Vella Jack or Irish Coolea.

WW 96
Wilfred Wong of Wine.com
Powerful and sturdy, the 2008 Schramsberg Reserve exhibits tremendous richness and complexity. The wine offers ripe fruit, savory oak, and appealing nuttiness. Pair with shellfish in cream sauce. (Tasted: September 18, 2017, San Francisco, CA)

Wine Enthusiast
An especially deep-gold color and enticing, expansive aromas indicate the extra aging time this Pinot Noir-based bubbly went through. Ripe pear, honey and toasted-almond notes weave across the palate as a rich mouthfeel is picked up by fine yet persistent bubbles. It is a delicious, mature wine that shows how complex and rewarding California sparkling.
RP 94
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2008 Reserve has a lovely spiciness to the citrus and berry preserves with notes of clover honey, croissant, yeast extract and potpourri, plus a touch of allspice. The palate fills the mouth with toast and berry preserves flavors with loads of baking spice flavors coming through and a good, long, refreshing finish.
WS 91
Wine Spectator
Appealingly mature, with candied ginger and spice aromas and spirited baked apple, orange zest and toasty hazelnut flavors.

Focused on Schramsberg's top Chardonnay barrel and tank lots, and aged for seven years prior to release, J. Schram is the winery's signature Brut sparkling wine. Jack and Jamie Davies revived the historic vineyards and cellars in 1965, with a mission to produce California's first world-class sparkling wines. Today, led by their son Hugh, Schramsberg's team continues with this commitment to quality and innovation. Schramsberg also produces the J. Schram Rose, Reserve, Blanc de Blancs, Blanc de Noirs, Brut Rose, Cremant Demi-Sec and J. Davies Diamond Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon.

Reaching up California's coastline and into its valleys north of San Francisco, the North Coast AVA includes six counties: Marin, Solano, Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake. While Napa and Sonoma enjoy most of the glory, the rest produce no shortage of quality wines in an intriguing and diverse range of styles.

Climbing up the state's rugged coastline, the chilly Marin County, just above the City and most of Sonoma County, as well as Mendocino County on the far north end of the North Coast successfully grow cool-climate varieties like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and in some spots, Riesling. Inland Lake County, on the other hand, is considerably warmer, and Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc produce some impressive wines with affordable price tags.

Representing the topmost expression of a Champagne house, a vintage Champagne is one made from the produce of a single, superior harvest year. Vintage Champagnes account for a mere 5% of total Champagne production and are produced about three times in a decade. Champagne is typically made as a blend of multiple years in order to preserve the house style; these will have non-vintage, or simply, NV on the label. The term, "vintage," as it applies to all wine, simply means a single harvest year.
