Smoke and struck flint introduce this spicy, intensely mineral dry Riesling sourced from volcanic soils. It's gorgeously steely but packed with zesty grapefruit, lime and lemon flavors as well. Slim in profile yet penetrating on the palate, it's a wine that should improve well through 2028 and hold further.

From the volcanic rocks of the Stromberg and the Felsenberg, Fröhlich's 2018 Riesling Trocken Vulkangestein opens with an intense yet pure, refined and flinty bouquet of ripe fruits intermixed with the noble aroma of crushed stones and dried herbs—utterly complex but airy and fine like perfume. Vital and intense on the first attack, this is a juicy, intense and elegant, persistently mineral dry Riesling with raisin flavors on the long, taut and aromatic, quite powerful but structured finish. This 2018 Riesling from volcanic rocks is still terribly young but absolutely impressive in its tension, perfectly clear juice and mineral grip. You'd waste its talents if you drink this wine too young.

A regal variety of incredible purity and precision, this versatile grape can be just as enjoyable dry or sweet, young or old, still or sparkling and can age longer than nearly any other white variety. First, look for the world “trocken.” (“Halbtrocken” or “feinherb” mean off-dry.) Also a higher abv usually indicates a drier Riesling.
