Winemaker Notes

My good friend, Mike Martini, whose family bought Monte Rosso in the late 1930s, shares a couple of blocks with me every year. At 1,200 feet elevation, this is a classic mountain vineyard, resting firmly on the southwest side of the Mayacamas mountain range. Sitting above the fog line, the vineyard’s iron-rich soils are red, rocky and well drained. The old, head-pruned vines struggle for nutrients and the rich, concentrated fruit shows it.

Blend : 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot

The barrel sample of the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Rosso Vineyard, which almost has identical numbers in terms of alcohol (14.8%, and pH of 3.66), offers slightly bluer, blacker fruits and seems to be a tad richer and fuller – but the differences are marginal. This is a full-bodied, promising wine that probably should be laid down for 3-4 years and drunk over the following 25-30. This is another superb effort from this iconic site and highly recommended.

From the high-elevation site long prized by this producer, this wine opens with a sturdy tannic grip that takes time to resolve in the glass. As it does, ripe and robust layers of blackberry, currant and wild sage flavors emerge, bolstered by leather and bittersweet chocolate notes.

A style built to age and gain in the bottle. Quite trim and spicy now, but with a deep, rich, layered mix of dark berry, cedar, graphite and gravel that imparts a Bordeaux-like flair. Drink now through 2028.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.

Covering the western slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains, facing the city of Sonoma, Moon Mountain District is one of Sonoma’s newest sub-appellations. Here the well-drained, red volcanic and ash soils produce hauntingly intense red wines, mainly from Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varieties.
