Sarah's Vineyard Santa Clara Valley Pinot Noir 2015 Front Label

Winemaker Notes

Highlands’ Pinots are known for their dense fruit core and this release is no exception. Lush dark berry and bing cherry aromas and flavors are at the fore. There is intriguing notes of sage, thyme, and violets, with a nice overlay of vanillin-oak from the French cooperage. Tannins are dry and medium-weight, balancing with the trademark SLH cool climate acidity.

Drinking well now, the S.V. Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir will also reward a few years of patient cellaring. It should prove a perfect pairing with grilled salmon, seared duck breast, and most lamb preparations.

Pale to medium ruby-purple colored, the 2015 Estate Pinot Noir gives up notes of violets and black raspberries with hints of smoky bacon, garrigue and forest floor. Medium-bodied, softly spoken and fresh in the mouth, it has a lovely sating texture and great mineral nuances on the finish.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”
