      Winemaker Notes

Item has recently undergone a label change, this wine may not reflect label displayed. Sandeman 10 Years Old Tawny is a vibrant premium aged wine, a balance of ripe fruit with oak aged intensity, which highlightsSandeman´s quality. Selected Portos wines are chosen for ageing in wooden vats and casks, concentrating all their fruit andflavour. The colour matures from deep ruby through to red amber, producing a delicious and vibrant Tawny Porto. Fruit andmaturity are harmoniously balanced in a versatile wine, ideal to match a gourmet meal or entice a good moment.

The vibrant red tawny color of great intensity is typical of this style of aged yet youthful wine. It anticipates the elegant and complex aroma, combining ripe fruit, jam and nuts with hints of vanilla and raisins. In the mouth, Sandeman 10 Year Old Tawny is a most flavorsome wine, fullbodied and appealing, with a persistent finish.

Sandeman 10 Years Old Tawny is delicious served slightly chilled on its own and a surprising accompaniment to a rich appetizeror a strong blue cheese. It is also a perfect match to rich desserts from a tarte tatin, to custards, ice-cream, pudding with figs, nuts and raisins.

Once open Sandeman 10 Years Old Tawny can remain fresh for up to 6 - 8 weeks.

Deep hue. Marked fresh red fruit, almost vinous aromas. Big and bold with brooding dried fruit and a dark chocolate finish.

Rich and supple, offering creamy flavors of hazelnut, Christmas pudding and ripe cherry, with cocoa powder notes. Lush and spicy on the long, ripe finish.

The color falls at the intersection of tawny and ruby, pointing to the freshness that's apparent in the taste of the wine. The youthful fruit character lasts beyond substantial tannins, balancing the wine with density, firmness and length. A substantive 10-Year-Old to serve with a savory pear and almond tart.

One has to like the fieriness in the Sandeman 10 Year Old Tawny Porto. I know I do. This wine delivers a sharp edge, along with its sweetness, and bright fruitiness. While the tawny character is present in the background, the zippy, red fruitiness stays long into the finish. This Port is an excellent choice with poached pears and a healthy dab of blue cheese on the side. (Tasted: October 27, 2016, San Francisco, CA)

The House of Sandeman was founded in London in 1790 by George Sandeman, a determined young Scotsman. From a modest start two hundred years ago as a wine merchant in the City of London, to today's impressive lodges in Oporto and bodegas in Jerez, and the world's best known brand of Port and Sherry, there has been a continuous commitment to quality. The growth of Sandeman Port and Sherries over two centuries has been based on a balance of tradition and innovation, respecting heritage but always seeking improvement. In 1980, Sandeman became part of Seagram; today, as the seventh generation of the family and Chairman of the old firm, George Sandeman continues the Sandeman commitment to the quality of Sandeman Ports and Sherries, and to the future.

Best known for intense, impressive and age-worthy fortified wines, Portugal relies almost exclusively on its many indigenous grape varieties. Bordering Spain to its north and east, and the Atlantic Ocean on its west and south coasts, this is a land where tradition reigns supreme, due to its relative geographical and, for much of the 20th century, political isolation. A long and narrow but small country, Portugal claims considerable diversity in climate and wine styles, with milder weather in the north and significantly more rainfall near the coast.

While Port (named after its city of Oporto on the Atlantic Coast at the end of the Douro Valley), made Portugal famous, Portugal is also an excellent source of dry red and white wines of various styles.

The Duoro Valley produces full-bodied and concentrated dry red wines made from the same set of grape varieties used for Port, which include Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz (Spain’s Tempranillo), Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão, among a long list of others in minor proportions.

Other dry wines include the tart, slightly effervescent Vinho Verde white wine, made in the north, and the bright, elegant reds and whites of the Dão as well as the bold, and fruit-driven reds and whites of the southern, Alentejo.

The nation’s other important fortified wine, Madeira, is produced on the eponymous island off the North African coast.

Port is a sweet, fortified wine with numerous styles: Ruby, Tawny, Vintage, Late Bottled Vintage (LBV), White, Colheita, and a few unusual others. It is blended from from the most important red grapes of the Douro Valley, based primarily on Touriga Nacional with over 80 other varieties approved for use. Most Ports are best served slightly chilled at around 55-65°F.
