Winemaker Notes

The ruby red color of a young Brunello attenuates during its evolution leaving hints of light garnet which change as the wine ages. The structure is rich in dry extracts which reach up to 32-33gr/l. Tannins are present but soft with a long finish. This Brunello is excellent with roasted red meats and skewers of wild game while the older vintages improve over time even as meditation wines.

From Giulio Salvioni’s La Cerbaiola estate, the 2009 Brunello di Montalcino is a fantastic wine with an impressive degree of darkness and broad aromas of Indian spice and ripe fruit. The 2008 Brunello presents a more voluptuous style than is customary with the tradition-minded Salvioni. The wine shows a good degree of baby fat that should serve it well as it ages over the next decade or longer. Drink: 2017-2028. Rating: 92+

The Salvioni family has been growing Sangiovese grapes for generations, starting in the early 1900s. Thanks to the last descendent, Mr. Giulio Salvioni, this winery also vinifies and bottles Brunello di Montalcino. The first production dates back to 1985.

The vineyard, situated in the Commune of Montalcino at about 400 meters above sea level spans only 3 hectares. The soil is a mix of schist and clay marl. The plants are grown traditionally with the Cordone Speronato (Trellising) method and produce 42 quintals per hectares of grapes annually. Giulio Salvioni has managed to craft a true Brunello di Montalcino that is well integrated and balanced. Individualism and personal care have made this wine a bit of a cult player for the finest grained Brunello made.

Legendary in Italy for its Renaissance art and striking landscape, Tuscany is also home to many of the country’s best red wines. Sangiovese reigns supreme here, as either the single varietal, or a dominant player, in almost all of Tuscany’s best.

A remarkable Chianti, named for its region of origin, will have a bright acidity, supple tannins and plenty of cherry fruit character. From the hills and valleys surrounding the medieval village of Montalcino, come the distinguished and age-worthy wines based on Brunello (Sangiovese). Earning global acclaim since the 1970s, the Tuscan Blends are composed solely of international grape varieties or a mix of international and Sangiovese. The wine called Vine Nobile di Montepulciano, composed of Prognolo Gentile (Sangiovese) and is recognized both for finesse and power.
