Rosemount Show Reserve Shiraz 2003 Front Label

Winemaker Notes

The Rosemount Show Reserve label is applied to wines that have been identified as having particularly fine varietal and regional characteristics in early vineyard and barrel assessments. These wines are then given extended maturation in Rosemount's winery cellars before release. The blending of wines from two or more individual viticultural regions to achieve optimum quality has a long tradition in Australian winemaking. This Show Reserve Shiraz brings together two of South Australia's most distinctive wine regions, combining the spicy richness typical of McLaren Vale with the superb depth of varietal fruit concentration from Langhorne Creek.

Color: Dark plum red with crimson tones.

Nose: A concentrated and powerful nose with notes of stewed plum, anise, chocolate and spice. Oak maturation provides a subtle, creamy vanilla background.

Palate: Rich and powerful on the palate with dark berry and plum flavors developing more complex earthy, spiced tones. Supple tannins and attractive oak flavors make for a long and balanced finish. Delicious now, this wine will repay careful cellaring.

Food matches: Ideally suited to beef, duck and game, lamb

Though Syrah originated in the Rhône Valley of France, Australia is home to the oldest Syrah (called Shiraz here) vines on the planet. Found in Australia’s Barossa Valley, where phylloxera has never threated viticulture, these ancient vines are between 140 to 175 years old!

Having brought fame and merit to the country’s wine scene since the early 1950s, namely via the debut of Penfolds Grange, today Syrah (Shiraz) claims rank as the most widely planted grape in Australia. In fact, the amount of land dedicated to Shiraz in Australia is now almost equivalent to what it is in France. Australian Shiraz has its own personality with flavors and aromas of intense blackberry, fruitcake, menthol, tobacco leaf and umami. Conveniently one can find great Australian Shiraz at a variety of price points but the very best will be dense, gloriously complex and capable of long aging.
