Rivers-Marie B. Thieriot Vineyard Chardonnay 2014 Front Label
Rivers-Marie B. Thieriot Vineyard Chardonnay 2014 Front Label

Winemaker Notes

This is more green/gold than the pure gold complexion of the 2013. This edition doesn’t have the initial palate impact of the 2013 but the trade off here is more cut and delineation of both flavors and aromatics. Nothing here is muddled and the palate builds from the front to a swelling of citrus and mineral notes in the back. This wine also has that weight minus heaviness that they mentioned last year. It begs for an additional taste but those tastes don’t tire the palate. The finish might be the most interesting element of the wine where the fruit moves into a stone fruit area framed by all the racy acidity of the vintage.

The 2014 Chardonnay Thieriot Vineyard tastes like a Grand Cru Chablis with loads of crushed rock, oyster-shell notes, citrus oil, nectarine and a touch of honeysuckle. A cold-climate site, this tiny vineyard of 1.75 acres was planted with the Robert Young clone of Chardonnay in 1990. This full-bodied Chardonnay is an example of the complex Burgundian cool-climate Chardonnays that more and more producers are exploiting in Northern California.

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.

A vast appellation covering Sonoma County’s Pacific coastline, the Sonoma Coast AVA runs all the way from the Mendocino County border, south to the San Pablo Bay. The region can actually be divided into two sections—the actual coastal vineyards, marked by marine soils, cool temperatures and saline ocean breezes—and the warmer, drier vineyards further inland, which are still heavily influenced by the Pacific but not quite with same intensity.

Contained within the appellation are the much smaller Fort Ross-Seaview and Petaluma Gap AVAs.

The Sonoma Coast is highly regarded for elegant Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and, increasingly, cool-climate Syrah. The wines have high acidity, moderate alcohol, firm tannin, and balanced ripeness.
