A brawny Foothills zin, this delivers the meaty, sanguine flavors that zin tends to accumulate in these sun-warmed granitic slopes. Scents of resinous brush turn fresh in the end, as the wine’s acidity bursts on the tongue like a pomegranate pip. Its earthen tone would match king trumpet mushrooms grilled over wood coals.

A well-balanced Zinfandel, the 2012 Renwood Fiddletown shows excellent berry aromas and flavors, yet does not overpower the aftertaste with too much heat—sometimes a problem in the hot Sierra Foothills region. I was pleasantly surprised by how well the wine finished and encouraged me to have another glass. Drinking well now. (Tasted: April 28, 2016, San Francisco, CA)
Unapologetically bold, spice-driven and jammy, Zinfandel has secured its title as the darling of California vintners by adapting well to the state's diverse microclimates and landscapes. Born in Croatia, it later made its way to southern Italy where it was named Primitivo. Fortunately, the imperial nursery of Vienna catalogued specimens of the vine, and it later made its way to New England in 1829. Parading the true American spirit, Zinfandel found a new home in California during the Gold Rush of 1849. Somm Secret—California's ancient vines of Zinfandel are those that survived the neglect of Prohibition; today these vines produce the most concentrated, ethereal and complex examples.
