Red Mare Alpha Mare Blend 2013 Front Label
Red Mare Alpha Mare Blend 2013 Front Label

Winemaker Notes

The 2013 Alpha Mare is a proprietary blend of Cabernet Sauvignon from Prichard Hill, Malbec from Coombsville, Cabernet Franc from St. Helena and Petit Verdot and Petite Sirah from Calistoga. These wines came to gather effortlessly to produce a unique, fun yet serious wine that is rich and dense with generous blue fruit and a full profile of spices, caramel and leather. The mouth feel of this wine is dense but, in the Red Mare style, still quite lively with beautiful fresh acidity that will keep this wine improving during aging for many years to come.

The 2013 Alpha Mare is a richer, more concentrated wine that's a blend of 97.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2.5% Malbec aged 22 months in 87% new French oak. The wine shows good depth, ripeness, plenty of power and a nicely textured, pure mouthfeel with black fruits, earth and a touch of incense, espresso and chocolate. Drink it over the next 10-15 years.

Undoubtedly proving its merit over and over, Napa Valley is a now a leading force in the world of prestigious red wine regions. Though Cabernet Sauvignon dominates Napa Valley, other red varieties certainly thrive here. Important but often overlooked include Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties well-regarded on their own as well as for their blending capacities. Very old vine Zinfandel represents an important historical stronghold for the region and Pinot noir is produced in the cooler southern parts, close to the San Pablo Bay.

Perfectly situated running north to south, the valley acts as a corridor, pulling cool, moist air up from the San Pablo Bay in the evenings during the hot days of the growing season, which leads to even and slow grape ripening. Furthermore the valley claims over 100 soil variations including layers of volcanic, gravel, sand and silt—a combination excellent for world-class red wine production.
