Winemaker Notes

This blend is both elegant and powerful, showcasing Viognier'sbest qualities. On the nose, sliced peaches and pineapple are brightened by zesty lime and green melon, with further hints of coriander and the terroir-derived aroma of wild rose thicket. The palate is smooth, creamy, and full, balanced by bright acidity thatcarries the lengthy finish and invites another sip.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2012 Viognier is a clean, classic example of the variety and offers up perfumed stone fruits, fresh apricot and hints of flowers to go with a medium-bodied, supple and pure mouthfeel.

Ranchero, California
Founded by way of endless infatuation and intellectual curiosity, Ranchero Cellars is my just reward for years of making wine for others. I have lived and breathed winemaking on all levels – from the storied and venerated Napa institutions, to the intrepid Paso Robles startup – and have come to understand that this is where I belong. Over the past 16 years I have fallen in love with certain vineyards, particular varieties, specific styles and methods. Here is where I am free to bring them all together, exploring, learning, and asking new questions. I can combine time-tested processes with cutting-edge technology. I can make impeccably balanced, elegant and polished whites, while I try to wrap my brain around the wild, brambly, and gnarly red beast that is Carignan. I hope you’ll come along with me as I ride these dusty roads and rocky hillsides. And remember to close the gate on your way out.

XOXO Amy Jean

Paso Robles has made a name for itself as a source of supple, powerful, fruit-driven wines. But with eleven smaller sub-AVAs, there is actually quite a bit of diversity to be found in this inland portion of California’s Central Coast.

Just east over the Santa Lucia Mountains from the chilly Pacific Ocean, lie the coolest in the region: Adelaida, Templeton Gap and (Paso Robles) Willow Creek Districts, as well as York Mountain AVA and Santa Margarita Ranch. These all experience more ocean fog, wind and precipitation compared to the rest of the Paso sub-appellations. The San Miguel, (Paso Robles) Estrella, (Paso Robles) Geneso, (Paso Robles) Highlands, El Pomar and Creston Districts, along with San Juan Creek, are the hotter, more western appellations of the greater Paso Robles AVA.

This is mostly red wine country, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel standing out as the star performers. Other popular varieties include Merlot, Petite Sirah, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Grenache and Rhône blends, both red and white. There is a fairly uniform tendency here towards wines that are unapologetically bold and opulently fruit-driven, albeit with a surprising amount of acidity thanks to the region’s chilly nighttime temperatures.

Full-figured and charmingly floral, Viognier is one of the most important white grapes of the northern Rhône where it is used both to produce single varietal wines and as an important blending grape. Look for great New World examples from California, Oregon, Washington and cooler parts of Australia.
