Winemaker Notes

The Proyecto la Garnacha Salvaje del Moncayo translates to the Wild Garnacha Project of Moncayo. The concept behind this wine is simple. Find old, neglected Garnacha vineyards and bring them back to life. This is an impressive wine due to its roundness and youth. It expresses all the complex qualities of the Garnacha variety and is aged for 5 months in new French oak barrels for added complexity and texture. It is a fresh and fruity wine with a smooth tannin structure. Wild by name and wild by nature, this splendid Garnacha has a real sense of mountain freshness and scrubland herbiness. The color is very dark and black cherry red. The nose is lush and ripe, there are bright and juicy red berries, a bit of spice, a savory herbal scent, mint, a whiff of smoke, blackberry, and pepper. It lets the flavors unfold and gets your palate looking for another sip.

Grenache thrives in any warm, Mediterranean climate where ample sunlight allows its clusters to achieve full phenolic ripeness. While Grenache's birthplace is Spain (there called Garnacha), today it is more recognized as the key player in the red blends of the Southern Rhône, namely Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côtes du Rhône and its villages. Somm Secret—The Italian island of Sardinia produces bold, rustic, single varietal Grenache (there called Cannonau). California, Washington and Australia have achieved found success with Grenache, both flying solo and in blends.

Just north of Spain’s famous Rioja region, Navarra excels in the production of full and fruit-dominant reds and good quality, dry rosés. Garnacha holds most of the land under vine, with Tempranillo coming in second place.
