The savory, earthy nose redolent with raw meat, soil, balsamic vinegar, pepper and black cherries. Strawberries join the cherries on the palate to create a vibrant juiciness, but with the earthiness continuing through a warm, spicy finish.

The 2018 Syrah is coy in the glass, with blackberry, cedar shavings and violets forming its bouquet. This is round and cool-toned on the palate, showing polished red and black fruits accentuated by citrus. The 2018 finishes lightly structured and a bit chewy. Licorice hints linger. I recommend another year of cellaring to bring out more aromatic complexity.

Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Known as the ancient homeland of the Latins, today there is a vigorus wine industry beyond the city limits of modern, bustling Rome. The Cesanese grape, full of red berry, spice and rose, is responsible for Lazio’s only true local reds. Lazio’s most famous white wine, called Frascati, is based on the local Malvasia del Lazio and Trebbiano Toscana. A sweet version, called Cannellino di Frascati, is also made.
