Winemaker Notes

High on the mountaintop where Cab is King, this 100% varietal was produced from three of the most awesome Cabernet lots this vineyard has ever produced. Bountiful aromas of ripe cherry and cassis mingle with smoky oak nuances. Immense, round and sweet on the mid palate, soft tannins linger with ripe berry flavors. Finish tannins provide the essential grip for long term cellaring. As this wine ages and its tannins soften further, the finish may last for days! The '96 Cabernet vintage on the mountain can only be called great – the most extracted lots that are assembled here are unbelievable. This wine is truly the best of the best, and will continue to improve for decades.

The virtually perfect 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve (330 cases) is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Opaque purple-colored, with a profound bouquet of minerals, flowers, black fruits, and spice, this awesomely concentrated, multi-layered wine represents the essence of Cabernet Sauvignon. Amazingly, it is neither ponderous nor heavy handed, with the oak, acidity, and tannin woven into the wine's formidable, concentrated personality. The finish lasts for nearly a minute. Sadly, it is extremely limited in availability, but what a compelling wine it is! Anticipated maturity: 2008-2025. This is a spectacular wine that must be tasted to be believed.

Savory and developed aromas of blackcurrants, spices and earth. The palate is full-bodied with fine tannins and acidity, giving notes of plums, mocha, licorice and dried herbs. Age has started to soften the wine and bring out a savory edge

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.

Reaching up California's coastline and into its valleys north of San Francisco, the North Coast AVA includes six counties: Marin, Solano, Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake. While Napa and Sonoma enjoy most of the glory, the rest produce no shortage of quality wines in an intriguing and diverse range of styles.

Climbing up the state's rugged coastline, the chilly Marin County, just above the City and most of Sonoma County, as well as Mendocino County on the far north end of the North Coast successfully grow cool-climate varieties like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and in some spots, Riesling. Inland Lake County, on the other hand, is considerably warmer, and Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc produce some impressive wines with affordable price tags.
