Winemaker Notes

On the nose, we get aromas of forest floor, cherries, anise, sandalwood and classic "Santa Maria spice." Flavors of rich, red cherries, plum and cola are presented with exceptionally fine tannins, balance and integration. This Pinot Noir will continue to develop complexity for years to come.

An intensely floral and highly spiced nose leads to phenolically ripe medium-bodied flavors that display excellent detail as well as outstanding depth and length on the balanced, pure and energetic finish. The supporting tannins are moderately firm and impressively fine-grained and this should amply repay mid-term cellaring. This is well worth considering.

Presqu'ile, California
Presqu'ile Winery Video
Presqu'ile arose from our penchant for fine wines, an inclination for adventure, the discovery of Santa Maria Valley's ideal terroir, and the desire to rebuild our family’s gathering place after the original Presqu’ile was destroyed during Hurricane Katrina. Their property includes 73 acres of certified sustainably farmed vineyards on our 200-acre property where they craft Santa Maria Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah and Santa Barbara County Sauvignon Blanc. Today, two generations of Murphys form the heart of Presqu'ile: Matt, Amanda, Jonathan, Anna, Madison and Suzanne, together with winemaker Dieter Cronje and vineyard manager Jim Stollberg.

Santa Maria Valley lies mainly in northern Santa Barbara County, with a small portion of it overlapping southern San Luis Obispo County. It is close to the Pacific, and runs east-west, which means warmer air in the eastern end draws cool air off the ocean in the west, and brings it through the valley. This effect, combined with abundant sunshine, lengthens the growing season. The longer growing season leads to long hang time, which promotes both ripeness and optimal acidity levels in grape berries. As early as the 1970’s, Santa Maria Valley was recognized as being a superior source of wine grapes, certainly including Chardonnay and Syrah. But arguably the top variety here is Pinot Noir.

Originally a domain primarily of growers, including the Miller Family of the justifiably famous Bien Nacido Vineyard, this AVA is now home to over 30 wineries. Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir consistently offers full flavors of cherry, strawberry and raspberry, often accompanied by notes of spice, cola, vanilla and earth. They show impressive balance and elegance, as well as great versatility with food.
