Winemaker Notes

2014 is the first vintage for a Piedrasassi Mourvedre-based wine. Piedrasassi has been working with the Harrison-Clarke Vineyard since 2003, the first vintage of Piedrasassi and the first year these vines bore fruit. Hilarie and Roger Harrison planted their estate mostly to Syrah but later grafted over some vines to Mourvedre—in part as a response to some of the fruit ripening a bit quicker on the clay over limestone soils there. Mourvedre is a later, more patient grape, taking its time through the growing season and not as prone to jackrabbit-fast ripening on calcareous soils as Syrah tends to be. Some Syrah at this site still matures a little early for our liking, but the addition of the Mourvedre at assemblage brings nuance and balance in the midst of southern-Rhone style robustness.

A winery project since 2003, Piedrasassi has produced a fine Rhone- style red wine blend with this first release. Made from 50% Syrah and 50% Mourvedre, the 2014 Mourvedre/Syrah offers complex flavors of black fruit and chalk. Layered and textured on the palate, this wine pairs well with braised meat dishes. With bold fruit flavors and accents of sweet spice, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre form the base of the classic Rhône Red Blend, while Carignan, Cinsault and Counoise often come in to play. Though they originated from France’s southern Rhône Valley, with some creative interpretation, Rhône blends have also become popular in other countries. Somm Secret—Putting their own local spin on the Rhône Red Blend, those from Priorat often include Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. In California, it is not uncommon to see Petite Sirah make an appearance.

Accounting for only ten percent of the greater Santa Ynez AVA, Ballard Canyon’s north-south orientation provides an ideal pattern of sunshine and martime fog for producing excellent Syrah. While Syrah is planted to half of the total AVA acreage, an additional third is dedicated to other Rhône varieties, red and white.
