Winemaker Notes

Pey-Marin Pinot Noir hails from a twenty-five year-old, eight acre site eight miles from the Pacific Ocean. It is an "assemblage" of multiple clones, several chilly west Marin sites, and traditional Burgundian winemaking. The primary site is dry-farmed and has very low yields (typically <1.25 tons acre). cool climate style emphasizes varietal purity and subtle forest floor notes.

Vintage 2016 was an exemplary vintage. Rains came through the winter, replenishing the aquifer and giving the dry-farmed vines hope. August & September were cool but sunny. We hand-harvested our Pinot Noir on September 12.

Just-ripe and warmly spicy, this inviting and light-bodied wine shows fresh redcherry and plum aromas, broad and mouthfilling fruit flavors and moderate baking-spice and toast nuances from oak aging.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”

Bordered by Napa and Sonoma Valleys to the north and the Golden gate Bridge to the south, most of the region’s vineyards are planted on Marin County’s western side where they are exposed to the moist and cold air of the Pacific Ocean. Varieties like Pinot noir and Chardonnay do well here.
