Winemaker Notes

Black with a ruby red hue and crimson reflection on the rim, the 2011 Les Pavots reveals an intense bouquet of strawberry, black truffle oil, vanilla bean, blueberry and blackberry, with nuances of black currant liquor, cedar, cacao, cigar box, black tea, graphite, a stylish 'garrigue' touch, forest floor and cloves. Extremely full-bodied, this wine offers a potpourri feeling with the same rich, ripe fruit impressions on the palate with black truffle, tobacco, grey and white pepper notes. The mouth feel is dense and round, with a mineral background and ample elegant tannins, which leads to a long finish. The 2011 Les Pavots will benefit from another year of cellaring and will age gracefully for two decades.

Critical Acclaim

All Vintages
RP 92
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2011 Les Pavots (3,086 cases) is composed of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot. Its chocolaty fudge-like notes intermixed with espresso roast, black and red currants, smoky barbecue and underbrush are followed by a deep, rich, full-bodied, outstanding red wine that should drink well for 10-15 years.
WS 91
Wine Spectator
Notably complex, with pure, ripe currant and blackberry fruit that's dense, focused and firmly tannic, ending with a burst of espresso, cherry rhubarb and black licorice flavors and firm, dry tannins. Shows more grace and refinement than most 2011s. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2022. 3,086 cases made.

Peter Michael, Sonoma County, California
Image of winery
In 1982 Sir Peter and Lady Margaret Michael built the Peter Michael Winery on a square mile of rocky volcanic ridges that form the western face of Mount St. Helena in Knights Valley, Sonoma County, California. The estate vineyards rest on steep hillsides ranging in elevation from 1100 to nearly 2000 feet. Of the nearly 600 estate acres, only about 20% are planted to grapes. Peter Michael Winery is best known for single-vineyard and estate grown Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and a Cabernet Sauvignon cuvee of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The Peter Michael Winery remains true to its commitment to growing classic grape varieties in small mountain vineyards in order to produce great wines using classical winemaking techniques. Given this covenant to the product, only a limited quantity will ever be available.
