Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The 2013 Red Hills Zinfandel is medium ruby in color and offers notes of white pepper, herb, allspice, and raspberry. Aromas lead to similar flavors in a lively and refreshing structure not often seen in this variety. This is an easy, palatable ode to classic Zinfandel!

Made from vines at a 3,000-foot elevation by a Zin master, this wine is flavorful, round and rich. It shows plenty of fruit in the aromas and on the palate, serving raspberry and strawberry on a light bed of tannin, with plenty of body to back them up.

With the release of our first wine in 1987, a Zinfandel, our goal has always been the same - to produce delicious and reasonably priced wines that distinguish themselves from the ocean of wine in the marketplace. The wines we like to drink and the ones we seek to make are those with soul and personality.

More than 30 years of winemaking experience, decisions based on intuition and feelings, a great respect for tradition, and access to some of the best grape sources in Napa Valley give us a head-start in achieving those goals.

We are a very small operation, and nearly all of our artisan wines have a case level production of fewer than 1000 cases. We are grateful that word of mouth has sustained us for all these years.

Unapologetically bold, spice-driven and jammy, Zinfandel has secured its title as the darling of California vintners by adapting well to the state's diverse microclimates and landscapes. Born in Croatia, it later made its way to southern Italy where it was named Primitivo. Fortunately, the imperial nursery of Vienna catalogued specimens of the vine, and it later made its way to New England in 1829. Parading the true American spirit, Zinfandel found a new home in California during the Gold Rush of 1849. Somm Secret—California's ancient vines of Zinfandel are those that survived the neglect of Prohibition; today these vines produce the most concentrated, ethereal and complex examples.

Located within the greater Clear Lake appellation, the Red Hills AVA is perhaps the hottest spot right now in Lake County for new Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards. Recognizing the potential of its volcanic and obsidian heavy soils, many respected growers are flocking to the area. Andy Beckstoffer, a leader in escalating the quality and recognition of Napa Valley, has already invested heavily in the area.
