This 7,000-case effort retained the quality for which the winery’s limited-production wines are known. The fruit-laden 2012 vintage helps, and the wine beguiles from first sniff to last sip. Cherries, chocolate, sandalwood and saffron interweave. The mouthfeel is soft and supple, and the delicate balance of fruit, acid and barrel never lets you down.

Super fine and true to the varietal, the 2012 Penner-Ash Willamette Valley Pinot Noir shows the AVA well. More than fruit, the wine draws from the place. Medium garnet color; some dried earth and ripe fruit in the nose, very good, medium depth; medium bodied, quite rounded on the palate; dryish, seems to have a hint of residual sugar; ripe fruit, dried earth flavors; medium finish. (Tasted: July 1, 2015, San Francisco, CA)

Pale to medium ruby in color, the 2012 Pinot Noir Willamette Valley opens with notes of warm black cherries, blackberries and fresh blueberries with suggestions of forest floor, bitter chocolate and an underlying herbal note. Medium-bodied, it fills the mouth with warm dark fruits, lovely suggestions of cardamom and nutmeg spice plus notes of forest floor. It has a strong frame of grainy tannins and great juicy acidity to carry the long dark-fruited finish.

Penner-Ash Lynn Penner-Ash, Winemaker Winery Image
Penner-Ash Wine Cellars embodies the spirit and passion of small producers focusing on Pinot Noir in the northern Willamette Valley, Oregon. After working for some of Napa's premier wineries and Rex Hill Vineyards in Oregon, winemaker Lynn Penner-Ash and her husband, Ron, started Penner-Ash Wine Cellars in 1998. In the winery, the focus is on small-lot indigenous yeast fermentation with extended cold soaks to extract a rich, fruit-focused, textured mouth feel. Each lot is treated individually and depending on the outcome, either blended into their reserve quality Willamette Valley Pinot Noir or bottled separately as a vineyard designate.

Home of some of the planet’s most amazingly elegant and expressive Pinot noir, the Willamette Valley is a pastoral, mixed landscape of green, bucolic rolling hills, dramatic forestlands and small, independent, friendly wine growers. As a leader in environmental stewardship, the valley has some of the nation’s most protective land use policies, with two-thirds of its vineyards farmed sustainably and over half, organically. While the valley claims a cool, continental climate, and is heavily influenced by the cold, moist winds of the Pacific Ocean, its warm and dry summers allow for the steady, even ripening of Pinot noir.

The potential of Willamette Valley Pinot noir continues to attract the investment of serious growers and winemakers both locally and from abroad, as naturally the finished wines bring accolades from professionals and enthusiasts. With a range of styles from delicate dried cherry, raspberry and hibiscus to stronger notes of truffle, mocha, plum and spice, a fine Willamette Valley Pinot noir is a perfect expression of both character and grace.
