Winemaker Notes

Loads of red fruit float from the glass. A potpourri of cinnamon stick, dried orange peel, clove

and sandalwood on the nose, with fresh rose petals and a touch of flint. Hints of cranberry

and cherry compote are followed by bittersweet chocolate. Light on its feet but bursting with fresh fruit on the palate, its mouthwatering acidity leads to a savory palate with velvety texture. Deep and layered, yet deceptively quaffable.

Blend: 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc

All from clone 7 vines planted in a very rocky parcel, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Ranch sports a deep purple hue as well as sensational aromatics of crème de cassis, graphite, violets, crushed stone, and beautifully integrated oak. Aged 22 months in 75% new French oak, it's medium to full-bodied, has a pure, layered mouthfeel, gorgeous tannins, and flawless balance. The purity, elegance, and depth are next level.

Winemaker Tony Biagi's claim that Patria's 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Ranch is "the best Oakville Ranch I've ever made," seems likely to be borne out, at least based on this barrel sample. The wine is wonderfully fragrant and floral, with notes of sage accenting pristine black cherries on the nose. It's medium- to full-bodied, framed by silky, fine-grained tannins and shows terrific length on the remarkably elegant finish. It's a terrific value—if any wine that's roughly $5 per ounce can be considered a value.

The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Ranch is a large-framed, ample wine. Blackberry jam, chocolate, incense, espresso, licorice, cloves and lavender infuse the 2023 with tons of textural depth and sheer power. This opulent, full-throttle Cabernet Sauvignon is not at all shy, but its balance is terrific. A dollop of Cabernet Franc rounds out the blend.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.

Home to some of the most sought-after Cabernet Sauvignon in America, Napa Valley’s Oakville district stretches across the center of Napa's valley floor and foothills between the Vaca and Mayacamas Mountains. This AVA is home to the legendary To Kalon Vineyard and Martha's Vineyard, as well as many powerhouse wineries including Screaming Eagle, Silver Oak, Robert Mondavi, Opus One, Far Niente and Groth.

The climate is generally warm and agreeable, resulting in year after year of favorable vintages. Summer days see a gentle tug of war between warmer inland air and the cool air coming in from the San Pablo Bay, creating an ideal environment to grow red varieties. Oakville's diverse soils, namely ancient sea bedrock, clay and gravel, are well-drained, and perfect for high-caliber viticulture.

Cabernet here is often bottled varietally but is also popular in Bordeaux Blends. Oakville wines are known for their silky, sensual textures, structured tannins, dark and brooding fruit and lovely aromatics. These age-worthy and prestigious wines are favored by collectors throughout the world.
