Up until fairly recently, petite sirah was one of the most common varieties planted along California’s northern coast, a favorite of growers both before Prohibition and in the first few decades that followed. For those who have been burned by sweet, overextracted and overripe petites, this might give a clue as to why the obscure French grape previously known as durif found a niche in California. Bob Swain drew on two of the Parducci estate’s benchland petite blocks planted in 1985 and 1999 near Ukiah, both farmed under biodynamics. He added a bit of estate syrah and grenache, along with some fruit from grower Tim Norgard’s nearby vineyard on gravelly soil. At first the tannins are as tight as in the most structured young Bordeaux, firm and almost black in flavor but glinting with promising scents of violets, star anise and rosemary. It takes five or six days of air before the wine has absorbed enough oxygen for the tannins to turn completely velvety and release a cascade of cassis and blackberry fruit, still firm and aromatic and not volatile in the least. At this price, buy a case, but don’t touch the first bottle for at least five years unless you’re having steak.

Sixteen year-old Adolph Parducci arrived in Northern California with his parents in 1912. The new immigrant family settled in Mendocino County an area that resembled their native Tuscany. Even today, the geography and climate of Mendocino County are similar to Northern Italy. The County's hillside vineyards provide plenty of exposure to ripen hearty red grape varieties, while deep river valleys with good drainage support flavor-packed white grapes. Adolph purchased his first vineyard in 1921, just one-year after Prohibition. To survive, Parducci created a market for his grapes with home winemakers from as far away as New York. Adolph and his four sons built their full-scale winery in 1932 on the site of their original Home Ranch just above the Ukiah Valley.

In 1944, Parducci produced one of the first varietal bottling of California Zinfandel. This wine signaled the arrival of California as a premium winegrowing area and of Parducci Wine Cellars as the producer of quality wines. Two years later, we made the first varietal bottling of California Petite Sirah and today we are still the largest producer of Petite Sirah with just over 20,000 cases.

Reaching up California's coastline and into its valleys north of San Francisco, the North Coast AVA includes six counties: Marin, Solano, Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake. While Napa and Sonoma enjoy most of the glory, the rest produce no shortage of quality wines in an intriguing and diverse range of styles.

Climbing up the state's rugged coastline, the chilly Marin County, just above the City and most of Sonoma County, as well as Mendocino County on the far north end of the North Coast successfully grow cool-climate varieties like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and in some spots, Riesling. Inland Lake County, on the other hand, is considerably warmer, and Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc produce some impressive wines with affordable price tags.

With its deep color, rich texture, firm tannins and bold flavors, there is nothing petite about Petite Sirah. The variety, originally known as Durif in the Rhône, took on its more popular moniker when it was imported to California from France in 1884. Despite its origins, it has since become known as a quintessentially Californian grape, commonly utilized as a blending partner for softer Zinfandel and other varieties, but also finds success as a single varietal wine. It thrives in warmer spots, such as Lodi, Sonoma and Napa counties.

Petite Sirah wines are typically deep, dark, rich and inky with concentrated flavors of blueberry, plum, blackberry, black pepper, sweet baking spice, leather, cigar box and chewy, chocolaty tannins.

Perfect Pairings

Petite Sirah’s full body and bold fruit make it an ideal match for barbecue, especially brisket with a slightly sweet sauce or other rich meat dishes. The variety’s heavy tannins call for protein-rich and strong flavors that can stand up to the wine.

Sommelier Secret

Don’t get Petite Sirah confused with Syrah—it is not, as the name might seem to imply, a smaller version of Syrah. It is, however, the offspring of Syrah (crossed with an obscure French variety called Peloursin), so the two grapes do share some genetic characteristics despite being completely distinct.
