Obsidian Ridge Syrah 2012 Front Label
Obsidian Ridge Syrah 2012 Front Label

Winemaker Notes

A beast of a Syrah, the 2012 brims with classic, savory aromas of boysenberry, concentrated blackberry jam, coee, black pepper and tar. is Syrah is quite modern in its avors: ripe and plush with loads of dark fruit. Yet, it also boasts hints of bacon-fat and dark-roast coee that add to the exciting character of this wine. Youthful upon release, this Syrah will mature well for as much as a decade. The marriage of Obsidian Ridge Vineyard terroir with the Syrah grape is always intense and magical, and 2012 is no exception.

Professional Ratings

This extremely flavorful but young and tightly wound wine has black pepper, dark chocolate and smoke aromas, concentrated blackberry and cassis flavors, firm tannins and full body. This is a powerful, full-bodied, firmly structured wine that needs time to show its best side. It should drink beautifully after 2018.

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”
