Winemaker Notes

Very deep in color. The nose was slightly closed on pouring, opening up after a minute in the glass to reveal lovely fresh, sweet berries and herbs, along with darker molasses and black pepper/spice aromas. The palate displays lots of extract and weight. This is quite a mouthful. The balance is good despite the size, thanks to fresh acidity and a nice tannin framework. Excellent persistence of flavor. Impressive. Share with friends who like big reds.

Ripe and smooth, this big wine is polished in texture and brimming with black currant, blackberry, licorice and coffee flavors that sail through the long, expressive finish. Drink now through 2020.

Very deep garnet-purple, 2009 Reserve Shiraz gives baked blackberry and blueberry pie aromas with supporting notes of loam, dried leaves, mocha and allspice. The palate is very big, very full and concentrated at 16% declared alcohol with medium-high acid and firm grainy tannins. It offers very good persistence if a little hot in the finish. It should drink best from 2012 to 2022.

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”
