Winemaker Notes

Nicely deep in color, this wine, remarkably, is still holding on to a touch of youthful purple hue. The nose smells of coal dust, blackberries, blackcurrant and a touch of herb. On the palate the 98 Shiraz delivers a big mouthful of flavor, maintaining very good balance and freshness for a decade-plus old wine. There is a hint of roasted seaweed/soy flavor which adds further interest to the long finish.

Professional Ratings

  • 98
The opaque black/blue-colored 1998 Shiraz displays a fascinating bouquet of violets, black raspberry and blackberry liqueur, cedar, fruitcake, and pepper. Surreal levels of glycerin and richness are present in this full-bodied, surprisingly supple-textured wine. The finish lasts for several minutes.

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”
