Winemaker Notes

Our Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon,5% Petit Verdot, 3% Merlot and 1% Malbec. The Cabernet Sauvignon fruit is anchoredby one of our most prestigious vineyards, Val Peline's Terra A Lago. Terra A Lago'smeticulously farmed vineyard is in the foothills of the Alexander Valley at the base ofthe Mayacamas Mountain range and contributes massive tannins and dark fruit. Theaddition of Petit Verdot gives this wine its depth, Merlot adds sweetness and Malbeccontributes a hint of soft blueberry fruit. It's a wine that packs a punch, exhibitingflavors of blackberry, black cherry, bay and thyme with an oak profile of vanilla andtoasted nuts. Its soft, rich tannins make it a very approachable wine that is ready todrink now but equally suitable for hanging onto for years.

While Sonoma County is acclaimed—and rightfully so—for its Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, and Zinfandels, it also produces exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Of the region’s 18 American Viticultural Areas, only a handful produce top-notch Cabernet Sauvignon. These appellations include Alexander Valley, Knights Valley, Sonoma Valley and Dry Creek Valley. Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignons made in these appellations can offer a complex array of aromas and flavors. Fruit notes such as blackberry, blackcurrant, cassis, black cherry and raspberry often are accompanied by hints of graphite, dusty earth, cigar box, toast and vanilla. The varietal has a rich history in Sonoma, and some of these Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet-based blends rival the best from Napa Valley.
