Winemaker Notes

Montevinas 1997 Sangiovese displays a ripe, red-fruits aroma (plum, berry and rhubarb) accented by sweet, toasty oak scents. The compact, full-bodied palate delivers rich, juicy, spiced raspberry and plum flavors with moderate, but firm tannins, excellent acidity and a long, warm finish. This beautifully structured, delicious rendition of California Sangiovese, Montevinas finest bottling to date, will make an ideal companion to grilled or blackened salmon, barbecued chicken, lamb, and moderately spiced pasta dishes.

Among Italy's elite red grape varieties, Sangiovese has the perfect intersection of bright red fruit and savory earthiness and is responsible for the best red wines of Tuscany. While it is best known as the chief component of Chianti, it is also the main grape in Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and reaches the height of its power and intensity in the complex, long-lived Brunello di Montalcino. Somm Secret—Sangiovese doubles under the alias, Nielluccio, on the French island of Corsica where it produces distinctly floral and refreshing reds and rosés.

Reaching up California's coastline and into its valleys north of San Francisco, the North Coast AVA includes six counties: Marin, Solano, Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake. While Napa and Sonoma enjoy most of the glory, the rest produce no shortage of quality wines in an intriguing and diverse range of styles.

Climbing up the state's rugged coastline, the chilly Marin County, just above the City and most of Sonoma County, as well as Mendocino County on the far north end of the North Coast successfully grow cool-climate varieties like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and in some spots, Riesling. Inland Lake County, on the other hand, is considerably warmer, and Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc produce some impressive wines with affordable price tags.
