Winemaker Notes

Pale yellow, tending towards gold, with hay and almonds on the nose, and rich on the palate, with a firm dry finish.
Perfect for ideal for olive oil-based Mediterranean dishes. Well suited for all manner of seafood dishes, including raw fish, and is perfect with sushi. For vegetable based dishes year round, including the tannins of artichokes or asparagus, and the iron of spinach and liver.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2014 Vernaccia di San Gimignano Tradizionale takes a simple approach that reflects the straightforward winemaking traditions of the appellation. The grapes are pressed and fermented quickly on the skins to lock in freshness and tonic energy. The bouquet shows pretty mineral definition with ash and crushed seashell that segue to stone fruit and mild honeydew melon. This is one of the best Vernaccias to emerge from this challenging vintage.

Montenidoli, Italy
Montenidoli, the mountain of the little nests: 24 hectares of vineyards surrounded by 200 hectares of woodlands. The Etruscans were the first to discover this treasure and plant vines, then came the Romans and the Knights Templar. The Montenidoli winery arrived in 1965, heirs to a long farming tradition. Sergio was a teacher, whereas Elisabetta had the land in her blood; her family had cultivated vines and olive trees in Custozza, not far from Verona, since the 1700s, and, as a child, she had spent a lot of time wandering the vineyards of Valpolicella. Following family traditions, Elisabetta and Sergio respect the land, cultivating it with exclusively organic methods. Sulfur and copper are the only substances used to fight parasites, and only if absolutely necessary, because the Montenidoli philosophy is that sunlight and clean air are the best medicine to make the vines healthy, strong, and resistant to disease and bad weather.

The vineyards multiplied, planted with indigenous varietals: Vernaccia, san Gimignano's historic white grape, Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Trebbiano Gentile, and Malvasia Bianca -- The traditional grapes of Chianti. The first wine was born in a great vintage -- 1971.

Producing some of Tuscany’s best white wines based on its own variety called Vernaccia, San Gimignano is a small appellation to the west of Chianti centered around the romantic village of the same name. Vernaccia produces a fruity and floral white with plenty of verve on the palate and often a fresh note of raw almond.

Vernaccia's intricate history is rooted in San Gimignano. The idyllic countryside upon which this vine grows was actually named Italy’s first DOC in 1966. Somm Secret—The 13th century marks its first written record and the grape was celebrated widely in literature, namely poems by Dante and Franseco Redi.
