Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2009 Malbec was made from 84-year-old vines and aged for 12 months in 33% new French oak. Wood smoke, a hint of cocoa, Asian spices, incense, and black cherry compose the bouquet of this impeccably balanced, incipiently complex, layered wine. Give it 2-3 years to fully blossom and drink it from 2013 to 2021.
Mendel is the first name of the owner's father, a man who came to Argentina with nothing and ended up a successful businessman in different industries. He was also a man that loved the finest things that life had to offer, particularly wine. His daughter, Anabelle, honors her father by seeking perfection in her and Roberto's wines with his name on the label.
Most distinguished and celebrated from Argentina’s Mendoza, Malbec has seen runaway success since the early 2000s. Mendoza’s agreeable, continental climate with hot, dry summers and cold snowy winters allows the perfect conditions for growing outstanding Malbec. This grape is easy to like for its lusty, deep flavors and aromas of blackberry, plum, red cherry, autumn spice and tilled earth. It’s easy to find delicious, fruit-driven, affordable everyday examples and in prices beyond, quite exceptional ones with dense, supple textures that make them capable of aging.
